Odisha's AI Course for All Targets 125,000 Non-Tech Students

For AI and machine learning practitioners, Odisha's programme represents an unusual test of AI literacy at population scale. Rather than targeting computer science majors, the curriculum reaches 125,000 non-technical undergraduates across Arts, Science and Commerce streams in 107 remote colleges. The inclusion of enterprise design thinking and project management alongside AI fundamentals suggests a workforce-oriented approach that could shape how AI fluency is taught outside elite engineering institutions.

Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj attended the event as chief guest, which also marked the launch of the 'AI Course for All' programme with NASSCOM, the Academic Performance Assessment Portal, and the Question Bank Portal. Under the IBM-CSRBOX partnership, more than 1.25 lakh (125,000) students in Arts, Science and Commerce streams will receive skill development modules delivered through online courses, workshops, and project-based learning. The curriculum explicitly covers Artificial Intelligence, Digital Literacy, Enterprise Design Thinking, and Project Management. The initiative prioritizes 107 higher education institutions located in the state's remote and aspirational districts, and also includes targeted AI skill training for faculty members. By extending AI concepts beyond conventional engineering and computer science tracks, the programme marks a notable departure from the usual tech-only skilling approach.

The decision to include Arts, Science and Commerce students is strategic. In many Indian states, AI and digital skilling programmes remain concentrated in engineering colleges or standalone technology courses. Odisha's approach normalises AI as a general competency, which could widen the talent pool and improve employability for graduates who otherwise receive little exposure to emerging technologies.

The Nandi Foundation component adds an offline layer that addresses gender equity and soft skills. Final-year female undergraduate and postgraduate students will receive in-person training in financial literacy, critical thinking, public speaking, and communication. This is important because purely online delivery can exclude students who face connectivity or device constraints; the offline component helps bridge that gap while also targeting a demographic that often faces distinct barriers in the job market.

OKCL's role adds another structured layer: students receive 30 hours of communication skills training and 10 hours of AI-focused digital modules, while educators receive a 5-hour AI orientation course. The relatively short 5-hour teacher orientation raises questions about depth, but it is consistent with the programme's goal of broad initial exposure rather than deep technical mastery. The simultaneous launch of the Academic Performance Assessment Portal and the Question Bank Portal suggests the department is also building the data and assessment infrastructure needed to monitor the effectiveness of these programmes.

Further, the partnership with the Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India in Ahmedabad will send 40 selected faculty members through a six-day Faculty Mentor Development Programme. This is intended to strengthen entrepreneurial capability within academic institutions, positioning faculty as mentors for student innovation. While 40 faculty members is a modest number, it creates a potential multiplier effect if those mentors return and train others.
